Sports business minds from South Florida's professional and college teams met Wednesday at St. Thomas University for a daylong conference, where discussions centered on the region's fast-moving athletic entertainment industry. Topics of discussion included the upcoming Pro Bowl and Super Bowl, the economic impact of the new Marlins stadium, and what the future holds for South Florida's sports franchises. Keynote speaker Rick Horrow, a sports analyst who grew up in Miami Beach, kicked off the program by highlighting the progress the region has made in the past two decades.
"There have been 48 million tickets sold (in South Florida) in the last 20 years," he said. "We moved from a town that couldn't do anything, to one that has five arenas... and now two Super bowls. We've done a really good job in the community."
Dozens of sports executives served as panelists during the six-hour event that featured workshops on sports and business, sports and character, sports marketing and sports and facilities.
